For a little while I was feeling very on edge and mildly stressed out at all times. I knew what I needed – I needed some vacation down time. I hung in there until August 12th rolled around, and at 6 pm I walked out of the office officially on vacation. I try not to wish away the present day by hoping for something in the future to get here faster but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t looking forward to my one-week break all summer long!

It was the perfect combination of a staycation (the first half) and a road trip (part of the second half).

For the staycation portion of my time off we did a whole lot of chilling. I did some swimming at the lake, and while a lake is not anywhere near the level of the ocean for me, there is nothing wrong with a calm body of water that’s warm enough to actually swim in. As a bonus, the day was overcast (it didn’t actually start to rain until we were walking back to the van) so there weren’t very many people there. We had a blast making jokes with the lifeguards, I swam a lot, and I showed the kids that yes, a 39-year-old woman can still jump off a dock like a child.

I didn’t sleep in too much. I didn’t want to waste my precious days off by sleeping them away so most days I was up by 9. Honestly, that’s sleeping in anyway since I usually get up at 7:15 on work days. Even if we weren’t going anywhere in particular, it was nice to sit on my back deck drinking green tea; then I also enjoyed some backyard yoga. Let me just say, yoga feels great no matter where you do it, but there’s something amazing about yoga outside.

I really enjoyed the low-key side of being at home and not having plans all over the place.

On Friday morning we did leave home though and we drove 3+ hours to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia which is down near the bottom point of the province. I’d never been there and I really loved it. It reminds me of the town where I spent all my summers growing up, except for the fact that it’s surrounded by water.

In the evening we went to see George’s band play, which was why we were there.

In the morning we got up and found some food then went exploring in the foggy conditions. We found a great spot where the tide was way out and you could walk on the ocean floor, then we found the Cape Forchu lighthouse. It was all so beautiful.

I can’t even go any further without mentioning the amazing supper that night – scallops (fresh!) sauteed with tomatoes, mushrooms, and peppers, tossed with fettuccine. SO stupidly good.

That night we were back at the music festival to see George play with another band he’s in, The Shoes. We had a great time even though the kids weren’t allowed right in the tent because of the alcohol being sold. Our evening was almost screwed up by a grouchy security guard who wouldn’t even move over to let us look through the opening on one side but a lovely guard came by and shooed him away, then not only let us enjoy the show, he chatted to us all night. He was so nice I sent a commendation to the security company to let them know how much we appreciated him.

I also took part in a limbo contest. I came in third. Alas, no one took any pictures but it sure was fun.

Both Friday night and Saturday night saw us staying up way too late in one of our motel rooms so we were pretty tired by the time we drove home on Sunday morning, but it was such a great time. If anyone local is going to Yarmouth for any reason I highly recommend the Lakelawn motel – very clean, helpful staff, and amazingly comfortable beds.

Since I had worked the Monday before my vacation I had the Monday after it off as well. That was a great plan. Having one more day to relax after getting home was a welcome relief and it meant I only had a four day week when I got back to the office. I’m almost there and it doesn’t feel as long as the first week post-vacation usually feels.

Being on vacation was exactly what my soul needed, and my body kind of appreciated the relaxation too.

What type of vacation do you prefer – a staycation or one where you get away from it all? I think I’m liking the combo vacation myself!

    I’m so glad that you got some time to relax!! That’s one thing that is frustrating for me – a lot of people assume that working for yourself, and owning your own business, is amazing, but it’s not. I haven’t had 2 seconds to myself all summer, and since I have a wedding booked every Saturday in September, down time with the family is probably not going to happen for a long, long time…
