Saying goodbye

Thursday June 6th I was having the greatest day you can imagine on a work day. In the morning George had gotten up a little earlier than usual to make me eggs and toast to give me a break from my usual toast and peanut butter breakfast. It was a beautiful day so I took the bus right down to the waterfront and I sat on the boardwalk for half an hour and watched a jellyfish swim around the harbour, leaving me feeling relaxed before walking back to work. My work day was quiet enough to keep stress at bay and I had a couple of good meetings lined up that day. It was a fantastic Thursday.

Then a manager came and told me George had called the urgent line and needed me to call home. Hayley had had a stomach ache and I honestly thought that maybe he had to go take her to the clinic/ER and needed me to come home early to go get Breanna. I called back with that expectation. Imagine my shock when he told me my mother had just called and that my dad had passed away.

I wasn’t ready for that. I knew his health hadn’t been great for years and that he had been hospitalized for a couple of days recently for low potassium, but I had spoken to them on the Saturday and he was fine. I knew it would happen one day just like it does for all of us but I was incredibly unprepared for that phone call.

Since Breanna turned 7 years old last Tuesday, we decided to have her birthday party on the Saturday. She invited quite a few of her friends from school and we ended up with six kids from her class plus Hayley’s best friend and of course their cousin Claire.I was a little worried about how things would hold up with that many young kids running wild through my house but it was fine. It was loud, sure, but the kids were all good. No one fought or even bickered…

Sisters

Today was a good day. We had Breanna’s birthday party this afternoon with six of her friends, one of Hayley’s friends, and my niece coming over to celebrate with her. After that we headed downtown with some friends to see the Christmas tree being lit up in the square. We came back and hung out a bit before driving them home and it was just really nice from start to finish. However, I haven’t edited any of the photos so I’ll wait to write about those…

Although there was nothing wildly out of the ordinary about our weekend I would have to classify it as being pretty darn good.Things started off really well on Friday with one of the most mundane things you could ever imagine – I took the bus to work and then took it home again. This might not sound like a big deal but Halifax had a transit strike for 6 long weeks and while I had been able to make my way there and back with little trouble, it was still…

First Christmas in Halifax

at

Christmas was very different this year in many ways. We missed our families back home as well as our friends. The up side was that we had no running around to do and got to spend Christmas at home, just enjoying gifts and the day. We also had our very first turkey dinner that we did ourselves. On Christmas eve the kids had their bath and popped into their traditional Christmas eve pajamas (I have no pictures but they wore them most of Christmas day anyway so I have plenty…

Busy short week

at

This is going to be one of those fly-by weeks I think. First of all, Monday went by quickly even though I don’t really know why. I didn’t do anything in particular to move it along. I didn’t even pack anything since I’m running low on boxes. Still, I can’t believe that it’s almost time for bed.On Tuesday I have a Governing Board meeting and I have no idea how long it will be; we missed our last meeting because it ended…
